Requirements

In order to take Honor Classes in the Freshmen Academy, the following requirements must be met:

1. must sign up for three of the four core classes (ELA, Math, Social Studies or Science)
2. GPA in the eighth grade must be at least 3.0
3. ELA LEAP score of 335 or higher
4. Math LEAP score of 348 or higher
5. Portfolio to be turned in no later than July 15, 2010 (NO LATE PORTFOLIOS WILL BE ACCEPTED)

 

Ninth Grade Portfolio

 **THE FOLLOWING PORTFOLIO MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL FRONT OFFICE BY JULY 15^th IN ORDER TO TAKE HONORS COURSES AS A FRESHMEN!!

Definition of a PORTFOLIO: A portfolio is a collection of student's work which can be used to demonstrate his or her skills and accomplishments.  It is an organized and purposeful collection of student work that displays knowledge, understanding, skills, accomplishments, interests, and achievements over a specified time.

 You should submit the following information (in this order).  All information should be in a three ring binder (1 inch thick). 

• Picture of yourself
• Copy of your last report card (May 2010)
• Copy of eighth-grade LEAP scores (Spring 2010)
• An assignment that you are proud of from your eighth-grade math class (examples: project, essay, other assignment) AND a two-sentence explanation of why you are proud of it.
• An assignment that you are proud of from your eighth-grade English or Reading class (examples: project, essay, other assignment) AND a two-sentence explanation of why you are proud of it.
• An assignment that you are proud of from your eighth-grade science class (examples: project, essay, other assignment) AND a two-sentence explanation of why you are proud of it.
• An assignment that you are proud of from your eighth-grade social studies class (examples: project, essay, other assignment) AND a two-sentence explanation of why you are proud of it.
• List of awards earned (if any) in seventh and eighth grades.
• Answers to the following questions. Answers should be AT LEAST four sentences each.
• What are your strengths as a student?
• What are your weaknesses as a student?
• What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
• What clubs/organizations were you involved in during middle school? If you were not involved in any clubs, what type of clubs would you be interested in participating in high school?
• Why do you want to take honors classes?
• Write an essay on the topic below. Your essay should be 3-5 paragraphs and should use proper grammar and punctuation, include detailed examples, and use style and audience awareness:

 TOPIC:  What are your future career goals?  What are two-three things you plan to do in high school to achieve these goals?

Summer Reading

Students who are registered to take English I-Honors as freshmen at Central High School are REQUIRED to read the two novels listed in the box below during the summer.  English I-Honors students will be tested on these novels during the first week of the 2010-2011 school year.  Students may borrow the books from the public library or buy their own copies.

REQUIRED Summer Reading for English I-Honors: Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson The Giver by Lois Lowry

 **As students read these novels, they should consider how the messages of the two novels are similar. 

**A significant percentage of the English I-Honors first six weeks grade will come from work related to summer reading; therefore, failing to complete summer reading will affect a student's grade.
