Read to Succeed is our CHS reading program.  Each student takes the STAR test to determine reading level. They then read Accelerated Reader books in their reading range, take computer quizzes, and earn points for an English grade.

The number of points needed in Accelerated Reader varies each six weeks. The grade is 10% of the six weeks grade. For example, students need 15 points for the 2nd 6 weeks period. If a student earns 12 of the 15 points, the grade is 80%. This becomes 10% of the six weeks grade.

The main purposes of this program is to create readers, improve reading comprehension, and expand knowledge of life and literature.

Students do the following:

1.     Go to the library with English class and take STAR test to determine Reading Level (Standardized Test for the Assessment of Reading.)
2.     Get STAR results and record the Student Data in planner on page 7.
3.     Check out an Accelerated Reader book in Reading Range (Zone.) The Destiny catalog or http://www.arbookfind.com/ will tell you if the book has an Accelerated Reader quiz.
4.     Get a Reading Log, fill it out each time you read, and get it signed by teachers daily. 
5.     After finishing the entire book, show Reading Log to librarian and take an Accelerated Reader computerized quiz.
6.     Get another book in your reading range and continue reading. 
7. Retake the STAR test in May and hopefully improve 2 grade levels.

Points Goal:  Number of accumulated points a student must achieve for 10% of their English grade. Student gets points by passing the quiz on a book after reading the entire book. No movies - you will fail the quiz.

Points Goals: 

1^st 6 weeks: 10 points
2^nd 6 weeks: 15 points
3^rd 6 weeks: 10 points
4^th 6 weeks: 15 points
5^th 6 weeks: 15 points
6^th 6 weeks: 10 points

 Incentives:

We have an Awards Luncheon each semester for students who have achieved a certain number of points. Students get pizza and prizes. A laptop will be given at the end of the year to the student who meets the following qualificaitons:

Highest number of Accelerated Reader Points
No suspensions
No D's or F's on report card for either semester
Cannot be a past winner
